Yamal, who had been substituted at half-time, was visibly affected, choosing not to take part in the usual post-match lap of appreciation and leaving the pitch with a serious expression.
Although the chants were not directly aimed at him, the Barcelona forward made it clear that the nature of the comments crossed a line, particularly given his faith.?
What did he say?
Taking to social media, he decided to publicly respond to what had happened.
In his statement, Yamal directly addressed the chants and how they were perceived.
“I am a Muslim, alhamdulillah. Yesterday at the stadium, the chant ‘whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim’ was heard.?

“I know it was aimed at the opposing team and wasn’t something personal against me, but as a Muslim, it is nonetheless disrespectful and intolerable.”
He went further, calling out the behaviour and stressing that such actions have no place in football.
“I realise that not all fans are like that, but to those who chant these things: using religion as a joke on the pitch makes you look like ignorant, racist people.?
“Football is meant to be enjoyed and cheered on, not to disrespect people for who they are or what they believe in.?
“Having said that, thank you to the people who came to support us – see you at the World Cup,”the striker said on Instagram.
The episode has sparked widespread criticism, with many pointing to the need for stronger action against discriminatory behaviour in stadiums.?
